The Mai Mela, which is held every year on the day of Makar Sankranti, will not be held this year. Fairs were held in Maidhar and Kotihom areas on both the banks of Kankai river on January 1 every year.
The fair was jointly organized by Shivasatakshi Municipality in Maidhar area and Kankai Municipality in Kotihom area.Both the municipalities have decided not to hold a fair this year in the place where innumerable pilgrims from Nepal and India come to bathe and attend the fair.

Among the rivers of various religious significance in Nepal, Kankai Mai has a special significance. It is customary for Hindu devotees to bathe and worship in this river. The people have been believing that their aspirations will be fulfilled in this river. On the day of Maghe Sankranti, there was a lot of goat bathing.
